Nestled among Shanghai’s plane trees, this project is a renovated French Renaissance-style villa transformed into an interior design studio. We honor history, preserve authentic textures, and embrace minimalism, blending the elegance of a century-old building with modern studio functionality. Free from forced nostalgia or over-decoration, time, light, and architectural lines define the space’s unique charm. With a muted, low-saturation palette, wood, stone, lighting, and furnishings harmonize perfectly—balancing old-world atmosphere with contemporary sophistication, while each area serves a distinct function and mood.

The studio founded by Gonzalo Sánchez Ortega and Armando Diago intervenes in San Sebastián to bring the Centro de la Memoria (Memory Center) to life. Located on a 600 sqm ground floor originally characterized by its darkness and structural density, the project arises from the need to reconfigure the site, placing the model of care and spatial quality at the center of the architectural equation.

QIOBAN is located in a cultural and creative block transformed from the former Hanzhong Post Office. As a boutique bistro and café that fuses vintage and contemporary aesthetics, this 150 m² standalone renovation adheres to the philosophy of “restoring the old as it was.” By preserving original features such as grey bricks, white-washed walls, ancient timber beams, and red roof tiles, and punctuating them with restrained modern materials, we have created a unique realm where the past and present coexist. Historical Context and Urban Micro-Regeneration: Situated on the site of the historic Hanzhong Post Office, the block’s overall renovation established a tone of “restoring the old as it was.”

The interior design of an Eyewear Store located in Ashiya, Hyogo, Ashiya Optical Store. The owner had a deep interest in architecture and design, and sought a place that was not based on conventional planning focused simply on selling products, but one in which scenes of customer service and the displayed eyewear could be regarded as part of the space itself.

08 Hans Verstuyft Architecten
WORK / House J
PHOTOGRAPHY / Jeroen Verrecht

The house is conceived as a collection of different volumes, which are hidden in the forest. The mutual arrangement also creates space in between. A concrete roof slab connects the volumes, provides shelter and practical use. Each volume has a specific function, the use of materials is tailored to this. The outside is roughly sandblasted concrete, which is used both inside wall and facade.
